  1. What are the benefits of switching dogs to a grain-free diet?
I’ve been feeding my dogs Eukanuba dog food and I’ve recently decided to switch to a better food. I came across grain-free kibble and I’m thinking of switching to Taste Of The Wild.
What will be the benefits of this change?

  2. The only benefit is that if your dog has a grain intolerance, he won’t lose all his hair on a grain-free food.

  6. We switched from Canidae to Taste of the Wild. We love it and the dogs are doing great on it. My old girls with crappy coats now are all sleek and pretty again. My puppies are healthy and active. Dogs are not birds so why feed them millet and corn?

  7. I can’t back up one damn word I am about to say. I can site no studies or research so this is only one man’s opinion.

Canines are carnivores; all one need do is look at the ones in the wild and check out their diet. Their teeth are those of a carnivore as is their digestive system. In my opinion we humans do both domestic cats and domestic dogs a serious disservice when we insist on forcing these round carnivore pegs into a square herbivore or omnivore holes.

Humans are omnivores as is evidenced by their teeth and digestive system. Vegetarians and vegans insist they are smarter than several million years of evolution.

The bottom line is we don’t feed pet rabbits hamburger, why do we insist on feeding dogs and cats lettuce?

    almost countless.

grains are not a biologically appropriate food for dogs. this means that every nutrient in grains(not a lot to begin with) is made less accessable to the dog, and can’t be used efficiently.

the dog will use the food given to him better, meaning you feed less for your dog to get the same nutrients.

lower carb level-dogs do not process carbs unless they are very tiny puppies, or very pregnant females. another time in a dogs life, and male dogs have NO need for carb levels above 11 percent. Foods that contain grains have a carb level of about 43%.
High carbs turn to FAT and SUGAR, this is the LEADING reason, aside from flat out over feeding, why dogs are obese and have diabeties.

grain free foods have higher protein, the building blocks of live. dogs heal better, faster, learn quicker, weigh less, and have more energy with a higher protein diet.

grain free foods eliminate about 90% of the issues that have caused petfood RECALLS. almost all of them have been tied to grains in food. eliminate that, safer food.

    biologically, dogs are carnivores.
they lack digestive enzymes in their mouths that are NEEDED to properly digest grains. humans have this, cows etc have this. dogs and cats and ferrets do not. for grains to be digested all the way, the process has to start in the mouth.

dogs have a short digestive tract, that is ONLY build for digesting meats, organs and bones quickly before bacteria can take hold. Digesting grains takes a longer digestive tract, dogs simply do not have this. they therefore poop put grains before its even digested all the way, WASTING food, and not getting enough nutrients before it passes.

  9. There are no benefits of giving grain at all, its another food (along With so many other foods) that is basically doing nothing but putting strain on the liver (because it is foreign to a dogs body). When the Liver can’t cope it releases allergens into the system causing allergic reactions or sensitivities

My dog was more active & had even a shinier coat, but this doesn’t work for all dogs, for some it’s too rich. It’s usually a good idea though!

I think TOTW is the best.

  11. Not all grains are bad. There has to be some carbohydrate and potato is not as good as brown rice. I would avoid corn, wheat and soy. To those who say that wild dogs didn’t eat grains, I say did they eat potatoes? Potatoes is usually the carbohydrate source for grain free foods and the digestibility (34) is not as good as brown rice (86).

Essential amino acids cannot be manufactured by the body; therefore, they must be provided by dietary protein. All of the eight amino acids must be present at the same time and in the right proportion in order for protein to be synthesized. The protein in rice is well balanced because all eight amino acids are present and in proper proportion. Therefore, rice is a unique cereal grain. The protein content of rice, while limited (ranging from 2.0 to 2.5 mg. per 1/2 cup of cooked rice), is considered one of the highest quality proteins to that provided by other cereal grains. Biological value is a measure of protein quality, assessed by determining the extent to which a given protein supports nitrogen retention. The most perfect protein by this standard is egg protein (biological value 100); this has been designated the reference protein by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Rice protein has a biological value of 86. Fish fillet protein has a biological value of 75-90. Corn protein has a biological value of 40. Generally, a biological value of 70 or above indicates acceptable quality.

Taste of the Wild is good. Also consider Orijen, Innova and Blue Buffalo.

  12. One not mentioned is the lack of getting allergic reactions due to candida or allergies to the grains. This can be a real problem, causing lots of discomfort for the pet, licking, itching, as well as numerous trips to the vet, medications that don’t work, etc.
